Every charity needs strong financial controls and transparency if it is to be a successful organisation and can be totally trusted by the public and supporters. Trust and transparency for all charities is more important than ever and finance staff have a key role to play in making sure that happens. Whilst many of the systems and procedures will be the same as in the private sector, the charity sector is able to attract high calibre candidates because of the huge added bonus of working for a cause that can make a difference to our communities, individuals and the wider world. That’s quite an incentive!
Finance may be about the bottom line but the bottom line in a charity can mean less homeless people on the streets; stronger environmental laws being introduced; or more children in developing countries going to school.
Types of positions in the sector are listed below. In smaller charities a finance professional may be expected to carry out many of these tasks. It is also worth pointing out that working for a charity will mean carrying out jobs you wouldn’t normally be expected to do for a company. For example, attend fundraising events, meet and greet HNWI or Trustees from Foundations. However, the variety of work and people you will be dealing with makes a charity finance job an extremely appealing alternative to working for a company. The pay is pretty good too, although again this does depend on the size of the charity.
