Third Sector Jobs – Careers in the Charity Sector – Charity Appointments
UK Charity Jobs lists a wide range of third sector vacancies in both the charity and not-for-profit sector.
For those new to the third Sector, it is a broad term that encompasses the wide range of organisations that are neither public nor private sector.
It includes small community organisations to very large international charities and NGOs. Normally they are registered with the charity commission, but they can also be associations, social enterprises, and co-operatives.
Third sector organisations are:
Independent of government. (Although many receive significant funding from statutory bodies, particularly those supporting people in assisted housing. This can run into millions a year).
Third sector organisations exist to serve the wider community and are not established to purely make a profit. However, the term sometimes used, non-profit or not-for-profit is a little misleading as they obviously need to make a profit to exist. The big difference is that they reinvest any profits into the work they do to help others, wildlife, or the environment. Together they make society and our planet a better place to live.
Why doesn’t the government do this work?
They do a lot. Social service budgets and environmental funding runs into the billions. However, third sector organisations have a special role to play by adding value to government services and innovating in a way government could never do.

- Test new ways of working
- Highlight a great Need and a way to solve the issue that government can later support
- Be independent
- Involves the general public in community work
- Strengthen communities and society
